Spinning Fiber Into Natural Yarn – Yarn Making Process

The Process of Fiber Spinning Into Yarns

Yarn is one of the most versatile materials available for manufacturing. Plentifully available and relatively inexpensive, yarn can be manufactured from many materials. Regarding natural fiber yarn, the most common fiber is generally wool. However, yarn can come from various plant and animal fibers as well. Depending on the type of yarn produced and whether bulk or small quantities are needed, various production methods exist for fiber spinning into yarns. Keep reading to learn about yarn manufacturing.

Ways Fiber Spinning Can Make Yarn

In Small Quantities

For spinning small quantities of yarn, hand spinning is a common technique. Hand-spinning fibers into yarn is a traditional craft that transforms raw materials like natural wool fibers into functional threads to create unique, handmade textiles.

In Bulk

The bulk manufacturing of yarn typically comes from large companies such as Meridian Specialty Yarn Group, Inc. The process of spinning fiber into bulk yarn is much the same as for smaller batches, but the larger quantities of fibers call for industrial spinning machinery. Also, it is even more important to take the necessary steps during the manufacturing process to achieve optimum results. For example, the yarn manufacturer must have thoroughly cleaned fibers to ensure the materials are ready for fiber spinner to ensure a consistent yarn blend.

Fiber Spinning By Hand

Gather Fiber & Equipment

To spin yarn fibers by hand, select the type of yarn you want to make. There are many excellent choices, although wool is the most popular natural fiber yarn. Along the same lines, there are different methods to spin the yarn. You can use a drop spindle or a spinning wheel to turn the wool fibers into a natural fiber yarn.

Anchor the Fiber

Anchoring the fiber is a technical term that refers to ensuring the ends of the fiber you are working on spinning into yarn are secure enough not to loosen as they twist into their usable form. Create a leader by tying a small loop at one end of your fiber. Loop this around the hook or notch at the top of the spindle, securing it in place.

Begin Making a Twist

Stretch, Spin, Pinch. These three words lie at the heart of the yarn-making process. First, stretch out the fibers until they are the necessary width for making your yarn. From there, with the help of the anchor and tools you have selected, you spin the fibers. You must ensure a tight line and taunt to keep the fibers from falling apart and to keep knots out of the finished yarn. Different spinning techniques, such as worsted or woolen spinning, produce different results regarding yarn smoothness, strength, and warmth.

Fiber Spinning In Mass Quantities

Cleaned

For manufacturing mass quantities of natural fiber yarn, you must clean and card the fibers to remove impurities, align them, and create a consistent blend. This step helps ensure even spinning, especially when you spin large amounts of fibers into yarn. If you do not catch any impurities or outside materials at the beginning, the manufacturer will load them into the machine with the other fibers and end up in the finished product, or they could cause damage to the machine.

Fibers are Loaded Into Machines

After the fibers are processed and cleaned, and any impurities are removed, the fibers are loaded into the fiber spinning machine, which automatically processes the fibers and creates the desired style and quality of yarn. After spinning, finishing may involve washing, setting the twist, and skeining the yarn. Proper finishing enhances the final appearance and performance of bulk yarn.
